Lonely Hearts Book Club - Lucy Gilmore

Unfunny, unoriginal novel with unlikable characters.

Sloane - a quirky librarian meets Arthur a grumpy edge lord who is channeling his inner annoying teenager and they proceed to bore the hell out of readers with the help of a totally unremarkable, uninteresting set of characters who have nothing to contribute except whine about how pathetic they and everyone else around them are.

The prose is strictly elementary school level. The dialogue is tiresome. The story is predictable.

Even for a light read, there has to be something to look forward to and that is where this novel fails. There is nothing imaginative, intriguing or interesting about this insipid book.

The premise of the book is that Sloane who is shown as a broken but spirited librarian comes across Arthur - an old man who beneath his tough exterior is craving human connection and together they form a book club for uninteresting people. Not sure why the author calls them lonely hearts - because apart from Arthur no one is lonely to begin with. They are just boring. And highly judgmental. All that these people seem to do is look down on those around them who are actually trying to live a productive life as if that's something beneath them. The only decent people you come across are Sloane's fiance and his family. Lucy Gilmore as an author needs to step out into the real world and step out of this sitcom based understanding of life as she knows it.
